Get Fit Right!
A
big part of playing great golf is having clubs that fit you properly. This
month, our Golf Professional discusses how well-fit
clubs will enhance your game.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I have one question for you this month.
Do
your golf clubs fit you? If you answered “no”,
you are in big trouble and need to see your local PGA Professional immediately.
No matter how technically correct your golf swing may be, you will never
reach your full potential without clubs that are tailored for you. During
a proper club fitting the golf professional will evaluate the following
specifics:
- Shaft Length: Among other things, shaft
length will impact where on the clubface the ball is consistently
struck. The correct shaft length will prevent a golfer from having to
alter a natural swing arc in order to make optimal impact.
- Lie Angle: This is the angle
formed between the shaft and sole of the golf club. Having
a correct lie angle will cause the center of the clubhead to
touch the ground. If the toe of the clubhead is raised, a hooking
shot may result. Should the heel be raised, a push or slice may
result.
- Shaft Flex: The shaft flex
impacts things like trajectory, accuracy, distance, and consistency.
During the golf swing, the club “flexes” throughout
until meeting the ball at impact. An incorrect shaft flex significantly
reduces your chances of solid contact.
- Shaft Type: Here, again,
personal characteristics make the decision. The composition of
shafts, their ”kick” (bend) points, swing weights
and torque rating are all considered when picking the shaft that
best fits you.
- Grip Size: The right grip
size can impact your ability to square the clubface and release
the club through impact. Even with the correct grip size, there
are so many on the market today it is really about personal preference.
- Clubhead Design: With the
advent of MOI (Moment of Inertia) importance, this factor has
become a big consideration for all golfers. When shots are hit
outside the sweet spot, a high MOI will reduce the twisting at
impact, delivering shots closer to the target.
- Set Make Up: The hybrid clubs
have given golfers a wider range of choices in the clubs they
carry in their bag. Numerous lofts and designs in woods, hybrids,
irons and wedges make the need for professional club fitting
more important.
Most of you can be helped in each of these areas, but even something as
little as putting the correct size grips on your clubs can make
a huge difference. Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club is ready to help you make some of these changes
in your equipment. You may schedule a club-fitting with any of our professionals
by calling Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club at 302-368-6640
