The “Slide” Means Straighter, More Consistent Shots
Do
you hit high blocked shots to the right? Does your next shot draw to the
left or even end up being an ugly snap hook? If your game is filled with
inconsistency and you are often uncertain whether your next shot is going
high right or low left, you suffer from the dreaded slide. I have
fought the slide for a long time and yes, it can be controlled. The
sliding of the hips too far forward during the downswing will most certainly
lead to inconsistent shots. Sliding hips can change so many
other variables in your swing. It often times is the root cause
of many swing compensations that can occur in attempt to salvage the decency
of your golf shots. Often the slide results from the misconception
that weight shift has to be “created” or “forced” during
the swing. Weight shift happens naturally by the momentum created
by a good swing. There is no need to “thrust” the hips
forward during the swing. This “thrusting” off the right
side is often done incorrectly in attempt to gain power, but in reality
results in a loss of power and control. One simple drill can help
you discover a better rotation of the hips through the swing and once
mastered will lead to much more consistent ball striking.
The One Leg Drill insures that the needed rotation occurs
in a simple and repeatable way. Try this drill at a slower speed
at first for safety and gradually increase your swing speed until you
reach 100%. Like all golf drills starting slow allows your
body time to process the new movement and will result in a better long
term understanding of the application.
Begin by standing on your left side with your weight solid over your
left hip, left knee and left ankle. Make sure to stand tall so your
pelvis is stacked high on top of your left leg. Don’t let
your left knee collapse low; maintain a slight knee bend in order to maintain
an athletic posture. Lift the right leg up off the ground and place it
farther back from your normal stance position. Allow the inside
of your big toe to touch the ground for balance. Don’t place
your right foot on the ground. It is simply hanging from your right
hip with no weight on the right side. Begin swinging slowly while
maintaining your balance on the left side. Gradually increase the speed
and length of your swing as you get more comfortable with the new sensation.
This drill helps to assure more rotation in a proper direction. It
allows the club to come back to the ball more consistently more often. The One
Leg Drill facilitates a good turn without resistance from the
right side in any direction. Additionally, it helps maximize the
amount of compression that you generate during impact by focusing your
swing around a specific center. It gives you a solid post to rotate
around during the swing which keeps you braced on the inside left leg,
increases the range of motion and utilizes momentum to its fullest to
generate speed and distance.

During setup while working on this drill make sure to keep your head
positioned inside of your left foot to assure that your proper spine tilt
is maintained. Keep in mind that during this drill your center of
gravity is automatically farther back as a result of your different set
up stance, please adjust your stance slight bit closer to the ball if
needed in order to maintain solid club to ball contact. The One
Leg Drill can be used with every club in the bag. Prepare
to be surprised at how far you can hit a ball on one leg. At full
speed anticipate at least the same distance as your club goes on two legs,
maybe farther. Definitely more consistent!
