If the Shoe Fits!

Kurt KolbeDoes it make sense to wear a size 9 shoe if you have a size 12 foot?  The obvious answer to that question is, NO.  Unless you like to endure pain and suffering, simply for the sake of fashion, you would not even attempt such a thing.  Golf equipment has a lot in common with this shoe example.  Does it make sense to use golf equipment that clearly does not fit or is not designed to cover your needs as a golfer? Once again the obvious answer is, NO. Unless you enjoy the pain and suffering you experience while watching poor shot after poor shot on the golf course.  If you try to run in shoes that are way too small I guarantee that you would not run very efficiently. If you try to play golf with equipment that is not the best fit for you I guarantee that you will not hit the ball very effectively on a consistent basis.

The good news is that there is a way to determine what the type of equipment is best suited for you in order to maximize your shot making potential.  The professional club fitting process is designed to provide golfers with the best recommended custom club specifications to increase performance through accuracy shot making ability and distance control.

During the fitting process a player’s ball flight is assessed to determine the optimal club type and set make up.  Evaluating ball flight and launch conditions identifies the style and model of club that is best suited for the individual in order to achieve his or her optimal ball control and shot making.  The fitting process determines the most ideal club length, lie angle, shaft type, shaft flex, grip type and grip size to produce more consistent accurate golf shots.

During the club fitting process current ball flight tendencies, personal swing characteristics, your preferred ball flight, and your carry distances and ball-stopping performance expectations are evaluated and discussed.

There are a variety of club models and many different manufacturers’ products to fit your game.  The fitting helps to decipher the different options and determine which of the various profiles, offsets, lofts, and aesthetic properties are best suited to meet your needs.   The goal is to determine the club head properties and shaft combinations that provide the most desired and consistent playable trajectory and distance control given the players swing characteristics.

Club length tests are evaluated on shot distribution, golf swing, posture and ball flight results.  The proper iron length will allow for ideal posture at address and will result in the most consistent on-center impact.

Lie angle (the angle between the center of the shaft and the sole) is tested.  Lie angle has a significant effect on a player's ball flight. When lie angle does not fit the player's swing correctly the ball flight will often force changes in their swing and the player can develop poor swing mechanics.

Shoe Fit

Titleist Equipment Company has done significant golf club research and development. The results prove after testing thousands of  165 yard  shots with #6 iron that a lie angle that is off just two degrees equates to a shot twenty feet off the target line. Similarly, a lie angle that is off four degrees will result in a shot that is on average 40 feet off line.

The shaft type and flex are determined to assure that they provide the player with the best performance, ball flight and feel possible during the swing.  Finally, the process is concluded by determining the best grip size for optimal club control, performance and feel.

A proper professional club fitting allows a golfer to improve the quality of his or her shots by enabling them to get back to the ball more consistently more often.
