Kurt KolbeExtended Club Drill
By Head Golf Professional Kurt Zolbe

The impact position is the most important part of any golf swing. It is the very spot during the swing in which the message is sent to the golf ball as to exactly how and where to fly. The chipping swing motion is in essence the impact position with a very small swing motion applying it to the golf ball. One key to making solid impact is to have a flat “firm” left wrist. Reducing the use of your wrist helps keep the club moving downward in the direction of your target. Too much wrist motion will cause the club to move upward and off line through the impact often times producing erratic and off line shots.

Extended Club DrillAmong the keys to producing more consistent chip shots is to hit down on the back of the ball keeping the hands ahead of the club head through impact. Make sure to you’re your weight primarily on the front foot and extend the arms on your intended target line low and long as the hands push down through the ball. Keeping the wrists “firm” and hands “ahead” throughout the swing motion not only improves accuracy it will improve the consistency in which you make contact with the ball. Listen for the “thump” of the club making contact with the ground after it contacts the golf ball.

A great drill to give you the sensation of the hands “ahead” is to take a long stake, rod, broom handle, or even another golf club and create an extension to your club. Flip the club upside down and place the grip side just below your club’s grip so that the shaft of the 2nd club extends your club upward past your left side and behind your left shoulder. The concept is to make your chip shot motion without breaking the wrists and allowing the extended club to hit your side through impact. The goal is to push the grip forward and down with the hands keeping the wrists “firm” through impact and not allowing the extended club “break down” and hit you on the left side.

If you would like to hit shots more effectively, schedule a private golf lesson with the staff of PGA instructors at Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club by calling 302-368-6640 ext 3.
