When Being Custom Fit,
Don’t Forget The Golf Ball!

Kurt KolbeI recently asked a golfer playing at Deerfield, “What kind of golf ball do you typically play?” The response was “white.”  Intrigued by the response given to me by the golfer, I was curious to find out if his answer was a sarcastic attempt to be humorous or a serious answer to my question.  A few minutes into the conversation it became apparent that the golfers answer was very truthful.  I proceeded to educate the individual on golf ball technology, construction, & performance characteristics.  During the discussion I came to a very quick discovery of just how little accurate information about golf balls this person possessed.

It was interesting to me that the more I asked this question the more I found that a wide number of golfers simply don’t care or don’t know they should care about what type of golf ball they are playing.  A large number of golfers strive for peak performance during their game, yet neglect to give the golf ball they are playing the attention it deserves.

The golf ball is one of the most important pieces of equipment in the game.  The golf balls on the market today are more durable, longer, stronger, softer and more accurate or any combination of these characteristics than the golf balls made just a few years ago.  Golf ball technology has benefited from advanced engineering and rigorous testing from all of the major manufacturers and the USGA.   The millions of dollars spent on golf ball research each year directly benefits any golfer that uses the product.  If you choose to take advantage of the technology in your own game, you need to keep a few things in mind when choosing the golf ball you play.

  1. Not everyone is Tiger Woods or Lorena Ochoa.  There is not one “perfect” type of golf ball that is “right” for everyone.  The golf ball you play should be matched as closely to your own unique swing characteristics and game objectives.
  2. Golf ball performance can vary.  Factors such as the individual’s own ability or the weather can have an effect on the performance.
  3. A golf ball that matches the optimum spin rate, compression, and distance characteristics does make a difference in your game.
  4. Price is not the “only” way to find a good golf ball.  The truth is that there are many different golf balls at many different price points that all have their own positive playable characteristics.

When you pick your golf ball, be sure to truthfully determine what type of golfer you are and what type of golfer you want to be.   Most golfers want all of the following - more distance, more control and lower scores.  Be realistic when assessing your performance needs and it will be easier to find the golf ball that excels in those specific areas.

In the past there was not as many choices of quality golf balls available to golfers.  Now there are many great options in all categories available for selection.  No longer are the traditional stereotypes used to describe a distance ball.  Labels and phrases such as “Hard as a Rock” or “Rock-Flite” have no merit.   Descriptions of a performance golf ball’s cover durability as a “Scuff Magnet” or “Cuts like Butter” don’t even come close to accurately describing the quality and performance of the current golf balls.  Many of the new golf balls effectively combine the best distance characteristics with the best feel and performance attributes.

In order to find the “right” golf ball to enhance your game, please contact me at the Deerfield Golf and Tennis Club 302-368-6640 ext 3 and I will be glad to assist you in the selection process.
