Do I Need A Hybrid?
I recently attended a Titleist Fitting Seminar given by our local Titleist Representatives and one specialist in clubfitting that flew in from Texas. The gentleman’s name escapes me, but his credentials were a mile long. He has worked with many touring professionals, and each story he told revolved around a big name on the PGA Tour. This gentleman was full of facts, but the one that stood out to me was that most players hit their 3 and 4 irons the same distance. He told us that to maximize a player’s 14 clubs you must find that player’s last playable iron. This means that you must find the last iron that you can hit high enough to hold a green. For the better players it could be 4 iron, but for the average player it probably is no more that 5 or 6 iron. It does not make any sense to have two clubs in the bag that go the same distance, so what do you do to bridge the gap? WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF HYBRIDS!
Hybrids have the majority of the weight distributed low and back of the club head. This allows the golf ball to get airborne much more easily and makes the hybrid easier to hit than a 3 or 4 iron. If your last playable club is a 4 iron, then you need a club that can bridge the gap between that club and your fairway woods. But to make a sound investment, you must know what your last playable iron is. Be honest with yourself and find a hybrid that will improve not only your game, but your score.
As always I am here to help. Of course, instruction always helps too! If you would like to learn more about hybrids, come hit a demo club this Sunday at our “Range Fun Day!”
