Sand Dollars

This practice drill will help you visualize an easy approach to successful bunker shots.

Put a dollar bill down in the bunker and place a golf ball directly on top of George Washington’s head.

Try to hit the sand with your clubhead directly behind the dollar bill on your way under the ball.

Continue moving the club through the sand as if you were trying to blast the sand out from underneath the dollar. The key to this shot is to make sure the clubhead continues moving as it strikes the sand. Any deceleration to the speed at which the club is traveling is sure to result in an undesirable shot.

Sand DollarsBlast the sand and keep the club moving through the impact. If you hit too much sand you will start to notice that the sand is stopping you from finishing your swing. This means you are hitting too low beneath the ball, and taking too much of a divot. If you feel the clubhead making contact with the ball, you have not hit deep enough into the sand. Hit the sand with your club and let the sand move the ball toward your target.

The next time you are in a greenside bunker visualize blasting the dollar bill out of the sand and you will be surprised at the positive result with your sand shots. If you would like more information on improving your sand play, please contact Deerfield Golf and Tennis Club at 302-368-6640 ext 3 in order to schedule a private lesson or register for a group clinic.
